Detailed Description

DESCRIPTION

This mod will make the URLs on your forum look nicer to users of your forum and it will allow search engines to index your site a lot more than with the standard URLs. It will replace many of the URL's on your forum with a much nicer URL...

Example URLs
Topic URLS
topic-title-t1.html

Forum URLS
forum-name-f1.html

UserCP
Inbox.html
Compose-new-message.html

Search Engines don’t like long query strings that PHP uses so it won’t index many the pages on your forums. This mod changes this by tricking the search engines into thinking that they are actually viewing a static html page.

Unfortunately this will only work on Apache Server (as far as I know) because it requires the apache module mod_rewrite to be installed on your web server. Apache web server is available free for many platforms including Windows and Linux. Mod_rewrite is also installed by most paid apache hosts I’ve used over the years as well and if it isn’t you could ask them to install it.

ADVANTAGES OVER THE LOFI MODE ALREADY IN IBP2.1.x

This mod does a similar thing to what the LO-FI version of your board does (only on apache) with changing the URLs of your forums. My mod is better for a number of reasons though:

* A lot more of your forums can get indexed in search engines more like the calendar, member profiles and help sections of your forum.

* This mod works in the front end of your forum not a strange looking backend LO-FI version allowing you to use the search engine skin feature of IB2.1.x to make a lite skin but then when users click off the search engine and they are referred to your forum they will be given your normal skin in all its glory.

* The URL includes titles of most things like help titles/forum titles/topic title/event names/etc. these increases your ranking on search engines because some look at the URL for keywords.

* Users see nice looking URLs in there address bars instead of huge complicated ones. Which they can use for example they can just go to http://www.yoursite.com/forums/login.html and they can access the login form.

It works for me, but I've had to edit the code manually for HomePage Index and all the most (Statistic 5, Similar, Uportal).
I'll try to do a Google/Yahoo sitemap for FURL .

How Can i fix this?

Ok, got a problem here. I was using this mod for several months on a 2.1.7 board. While awaiting the upgrade to FURL 3.4, I upgraded the board to 2.2.2. Now, I have decided to stop using this mod, have not installed FURL 3.4 and want to uninstall FURL 3.2 from my 2.2.2 board.

So anyway the upgrades, of course, overwrote sources/classes/class_display.php. Then I deleted FURL.php from the directory. But when I deleted the .htaccess file, some images stopped showing on my board (at least for my IP), ie. avatars, pics in posts, link logos in bfarbers link mod etc. Mostly the server would return a 403 error (file not found) and I would get a http 304 error for each pic the page tried to show in my RAW logs. I then tried uploading new images and they would not display either. Some members reported that they could see the images. So this was affecting at least my pc.

I deleted all cookies, cache and private data from my browsers (FF, IE, Netscape etc). Still no images. Did I forget to delete/change something from Windows XP?

When I reuploaded the .htaccess file, the old images started showing again, as well as the new uploaded images that were uploaded when everything was uninstalled. At least I could see them again. So how do I fix this? In other words, how do I completely uninstall this mod from a 2.2.2 board and get my old and new images to show? Is there something I missed here? Is there something I forgot to delete/change? Is this an htaccess issue, mod_rewrite or a pc issue(cookie, temp file)?

Your help is appreciated.

Thanks Kim for the 3.4 version

A quick question, is there any plan to make the pages also have the topic-name in the link?
the main page says for example 'furl-32-randomstring.html'
but the additional pages in the thread would say index.php?showtopic=164&st=1240

it would be nice that all the pages said furl-32...

just minor details i suppose, thanks again
